12CrNi3钢属于合金渗碳钢，比12CrNi2A钢有更高的淬透性，因此，可以用于制造比12CrNi2A钢截面稍大的零件。该钢含碳量较低，加入镍、铬合金元素，一提高钢的淬透性和渗碳层的强韧性，尤其是镍，在产生固溶强化的同时，明显增加钢的塑韧性。与其他冷成型塑料模具钢相比，该钢的冷成性属于中等。
